Possums: One of the peskiest of pests
Possums are nocturnal marsupials that grow to the size of a large cat. They are numerous in New Zealand and are often found on the outskirts of urban areas or anywhere there are clusters of trees or bush. They are very destructive in forests and are considered a national pest. They also carry bovine tuberculosis, which they can transmit to other species, such as cattle, deer, pigs, cats and humans.
They prefer to set up house in existing structures, such as hollow logs or trees, garages, under buildings, in roof cavities, and inside burrows. And, preferably near a food source for an easy commute. Possums are omnivores, which means they’ll eat anything – fruit, grass, insects, vegetables, flowers, mammals, birds, fish and carrion.
As well as decimating native bush and spreading bovine TB, they can do a lot of damage to gardens, such as raiding roses, stealing fruit and vege crops, and digging up lawns looking for grubs. And, if they decide to pick your garden or roof to reside in, they can make a lot of noise at night, sometimes scaring people with their raspy rattle! They will also make a mess of your rubbish and compost if you haven’t stored it securely.

How to Reduce The Risk of Infestation
Trapping possums is not everyone’s cup of tea and can be unpleasant. Possums can also grow to quite a size and it can be a problem disposing of their remains. To keep possums out of your property, try the following:
- To deter possums from eating from your garden, spray the plants they like with something bitter (such as minced garlic that has been boiled and made into a liquid spray).
- Remove any fruit that falls to the ground.
- Ensure all rubbish and food scraps are securely stored in containers that can’t be easily opened.
- Cover compost heaps or bins with something heavy.
- Cut back or remove any trees/branches that allow possums access to your roof.
- Shut the doors of any garages, sheds or other outbuildings when not in use.
- Seal off any entry points under the house.
